Maryland's early economy was based on farming and sea trade, with fine ports located along the Chesapeake Bay. Much of the state is still rural and great care has been taken to preserve parklands and forests.
Maryland is a diverse state. It has modern urban centers and popular suburban residential communities combined with horse farms in central Maryland, the Eastern Shore's "Tidewater Country", ski areas in western mountains, and beaches along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.
Some very important things happened in this small state. Washington, D.C. was made partly from Maryland, "The Star Spangled Banner" was written in Maryland, and a huge civil war battle was fought at Antitam Creek. Maryland is a beautiful state; there are lovely hills and mountains and the Chesapeake Bay goes far up into the state.
Maryland is one of the smallest of the Southern states and one of the thirteen original colonies. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington praised and called the troops, "troops of the line"; this is where Maryland got the name "old line state". Maryland is a border state, dividing the north from the south. It is also a coastal state, making it one of America's busiest ports.
More than a quarter of the state's residents live in Montgomery and Prince George's counties; each of which are a vital part of the Washington metropolitan area.
